Lakeview Summer Classic begins Friday

The prestigious Lakeview Summer Classic varsity boys hockey tournament begins Friday at Mars Lakeview Arena in Duluth.

Eight-teams, including Section 7AA power Grand Rapids, will compete in the three-day event. Rochester Lourdes, a Class 1A state qualifier the past four years which features senior forward Alex Funk, and perennial Wisconsin state champion Superior will also take part. The championship game is 3 p.m. Sunday.

Defending Section 7A champion Duluth Marshall is the host team. Senior F Kris McKinzie and junior F Anthony Miller of Marshall are elite Minnesota prep players.

Grand Rapids is led by Upper Midwest High School Hockey Elite League Team North standouts D David Horsmann, D Curtis Simonson and F Avery Peterson, a super-junior-to-be who had a team-high 46 points for the Thunderhawks last season. Senior defenseman Jake Bischoff, a Gophers recruit, is not expected to be in the Grand Rapids lineup this weekend.
